Telestrations Review: Draw, Guess and Laugh Until It Hurts

Why the Game Works

Telestrations is basically “Telephone” with drawing. Everyone draws a secret word. Then the booklets are passed. Next person guesses the drawing. Then the next one draws that guess. And so on. By the end, “cowboy” has become “hairy pizza”. It is delightful.

A round is a full circle of passing. Every booklet travels around the table. When they come back, you reveal what happened to each word, one page at a time. The reveal is the best part.

We once turned “snowman” into “sad marshmallow” in three steps. I cried laughing. Nobody can draw well. That is the whole point.

Gameplay & Rules in a Nutshell

  • Setup: Everyone gets a dry-erase booklet and a marker.
  • Start: Each player picks a secret word card and draws it on the first page.
  • Pass: Booklets are passed. Next player writes a guess for the drawing they see.
  • Repeat: Pass again. Now the next player draws the guess. Then guess. Then draw. And so on.
  • Reveal: When each booklet returns to its owner, everyone flips through and shows the chain. Points are awarded for correct steps.

Who Is This Game For?

  • Players: 4–8
  • Playing time: around 30 minutes
  • Complexity: very light, around 1.1 out of 5 on BGG weight
  • Age: 12+ (there is also an adult edition and family versions)

Anyone can play. You do not need to be an artist. Bad drawing is a feature. It is great for family gatherings, parties and even office get-togethers.

Why Is This Game Good?

Reviewers keep saying it is hilarious with almost no rules to learn. Simultaneous play means no one waits. The reveal at the end gets the loudest laughs. Many players call it one of the best “gateway party games” because it works for non-gamers.

The downsides: Scoring is not the point, and some players find the score meaningless. It also needs a minimum of 4 players, and larger groups mean longer waiting for the reveal.

Our Verdict

Telestrations is pure fun. Simple to teach, easy to love, and a proven crowd-pleaser. If you want a game that makes people laugh, get it. A party classic.
