The Gang Review: Cooperative Poker Heists Without Saying a Word

Why the Game Works

The Gang takes Texas Hold’em and turns it upside down. You are not fighting each other. You are a crew of thieves pulling off bank heists. The catch? You cannot talk about your cards. You only “speak” with chips that show how strong you think your hand is compared to the others.

A round is a mini poker hand. You get two private cards. Community cards are revealed in stages. Each stage, you grab a chip for your current hand strength. At the end, the hands are revealed in order. If everyone was ranked correctly, you crack the vault. If not, the alarm goes off.

We nailed a perfect ranking on the first try. High fives all round. Then we blew the next three. That is The Gang: pride, then humility.

Gameplay & Rules in a Nutshell

  • Deal: Each player gets two private cards.
  • Round 1: Everyone takes a chip that shows how strong they think their hand is (1 star = weakest, top stars = strongest).
  • Round 2 to 4: Community cards are revealed (three, then one, then one). After each reveal, players may swap to a new chip and change their prediction.
  • Reveal: After the last community card, hands are shown in the chosen order, using the best five-card poker hand from seven cards.
  • Result: If the order is right, you open a vault. If not, you trip an alarm. Open three vaults before three alarms go off.

Challenge and Specialist cards keep the difficulty balanced. Win a vault and things get harder. Trip an alarm and you get help.

Who Is This Game For?

  • Players: 3–6 (a Deluxe Edition supports more)
  • Playing time: around 20 minutes
  • Complexity: light, about 1.6 out of 5 on BGG weight
  • Age: 10+

You need to know the basic poker hand order. If you do, it is a breeze. If you do not, print a cheat sheet. It is very suitable for poker fans and coop lovers.

Why Is This Game Good?

Reviews are warm. Players like how it reuses something familiar, poker hands, in a totally new way. Many say the silent communication creates tense, funny moments. It is short, quick to set up, and the theme is charming. Some reviewers even say it is easy to learn if you already play poker.

Some criticism is about long-term replay value. Without the Challenge cards, it can feel repetitive. Also, at higher player counts, you may need Specialist help often.

Our Verdict

The Gang is a clever twist on poker and a very easy game to bring to the table. It is tense, silly and short. If you like cooperative games and card games, add it to your collection. Recommended.
