Monikers Review: The Hilarious Team Game of Famous People and Silly Things

Why the Game Works

Monikers is a team party game. You describe famous people, characters and things so your team can guess them. The kicker? You play the same cards three times, and each round has tougher clue rules. By round three, everyone knows the cards by heart, and that is when the magic happens.

A turn is a race against the timer. You draw a card, give clues, and your team shouts guesses. Get it right, and you move on. Repeat until the time is up.

I once acted out a card using only my eyebrows. My team got it. We high-fived like we had won the Olympics. This game will do that to you.

Gameplay & Rules in a Nutshell

  • Build the deck: Each player picks a few cards from a set they are dealt. Together, those cards make the game deck.
  • Round 1 – Say anything: Describe the card any way you like, but do not say the name.
  • Round 2 – One word: You get just one word per card.
  • Round 3 – Charades: Act it out, no talking.
  • Scoring: Teams score for each card they guess. Most points after three rounds wins.

Because the deck stays the same, memory becomes a secret weapon. That is what makes the game so funny.

Who Is This Game For?

  • Players: 4–10 (best with 6–8)
  • Playing time: around 45–60 minutes
  • Complexity: very light, around 1.0 out of 5 on BGG weight
  • Age: adults (17+), as some cards are cheeky

It is a hit with friends who enjoy inside jokes and loud laughter. It is not the best pick for very small kids or a quiet night.

Why Is This Game Good?

Reviewers praise the three-round structure. It creates running jokes and rewards teamwork. Fans also like that the cards are wild and funny, and that each play-through is different because the deck changes. Many describe it as a great “after dinner” game for grown-ups. Compared with older word games, it feels fresh.

The downsides: the play time can stretch, and pop-culture cards can be tricky if your group does not share the same references. Some players also skip a few cards that are too edgy.

Our Verdict

Monikers is a laugh riot for the right crowd. It turns a normal evening into a shouting, laughing memory. If you have adult friends who love silly games, get it. Recommended.
